RESTOREDM Project

Determining the clinical effects of an anti-inflammatory microbiome-restoring diet (RESTORE) in patients with type 2 diabetes through a tightly controlled nutritional intervention trial

Type 2 diabetes (T2DM) is a highly prevalent metabolic condition with a growing impact on public health. Changes in modern lifestyle, especially in dietary patterns, have been identified as one of the main factors associated with the increased incidence of the disease.

For several years, our research group has been investigating how diet can modulate the intestinal microbiome and, consequently, influence glycemic control and the inflammatory state of people with T2DM. Based on evidence obtained from populations with less industrialized eating habits and based on known mechanisms of diet-microbiota interaction, we have developed an innovative nutritional proposal: the RESTORE diet.

The RESTORE diet was formulated with the aim of promoting the recovery of essential metabolic functions of the intestinal microbiota. Previous studies conducted by our team have already demonstrated its potential to restore microbial balance and improve parameters related to cardiometabolic health.

This project aims to evaluate the clinical effects of RESTORE in individuals with T2DM, through a rigorous intervention trial, with detailed nutritional control. In addition to clinical outcomes, the study will explore the biological mechanisms involved, including the role of the intestinal microbiota in the response to nutritional treatment.

The expectation is that the results of this research can contribute to the development of new nutritional therapeutic strategies, with potential for direct application in clinical practice and a positive impact on patients' quality of life.
