Chemotherapy is an essential step in the treatment of breast cancer, but it can cause significant side effects, such as changes in body composition, increased cardiovascular risk and imbalances in the intestinal microbiota. Recent studies have shown that the intestinal microbiome can influence the progression of cancer, especially through bacteria that participate in estrogen metabolism.
In this context, our research group is conducting a clinical study to investigate the effects of golden flaxseed meal supplementation in women with breast cancer. Flaxseed is a natural source of fermentable fiber and lignans, bioactive compounds with anti-inflammatory properties and potential for hormonal modulation, which may have a beneficial effect on intestinal health and estrogen metabolism.
The main objective of this project is to evaluate whether this nutritional intervention can bring relevant clinical and metabolic benefits to women who have undergone chemotherapy. The outcomes analyzed involve aspects such as the inflammatory profile, microbiota balance, metabolic indicators and body composition.
This is a pioneering study in Brazil that integrates nutrition, microbiology, metabolism and oncology, with the potential to generate new scientific evidence in the area of oncological nutrition. The results may contribute to the development of more effective nutritional strategies, promoting a better quality of life and therapeutic support for women undergoing treatment for breast cancer.
